Teaching assistant

Teaching assistants keep classrooms working: supporting small groups, helping children who are stuck, managing the moments a teacher cannot reach. Schools need calm, dependable adults as much as they need subject experts. It suits patient people who like children as they actually are, not as they should be. Honestly, the pay is low for term time hours and the days are full on. But the door in is wide, the school holidays are real, and the route can run all the way to teaching if you want it.

A day in this job

You arrive before the children to set up, then it is straight into the morning: reading with one child, steering a wobbly group through maths, calming a fallout at break. Lunchtime might mean a club or a duty. Afternoons bring interventions and topic work, then a quick tidy and notes for the teacher.

How AI is changing it

Planning, worksheets and marking are getting quicker as teachers and assistants use AI to draft and adapt resources. Progress records increasingly write themselves. What stays human is the relationship: knowing this child, spotting the bad morning, and being the steady adult in the room.

What you need to start

Some schools ask for qualifications, but you can get in on relevant experience alone, including volunteering. A DBS check is mandatory.

Typical pay: £320 a week (about £16,600 a year).
