Vehicle mechanic

Vehicle mechanics diagnose, service and repair cars and vans, keeping the country moving one MOT at a time. It suits people who like puzzles with grease on them: every fault is a mystery, and solving it is the job. The honest bits: workshops are cold in winter, hands take a battering, and awkward jobs test your patience. The reason to look now is the change in the vehicles themselves. Electric and hybrid cars need technicians with new skills, and workshops everywhere are short of people who have them.

A day in this job

The morning list might hold an MOT, a service and a mystery rattle. You plug in the diagnostic tablet, read the codes, then prove the fault with your own eyes and hands before ordering the part. Between jobs you update customers, and there is always one car that fights back.

How AI is changing it

Diagnostics are the big shift: AI reads fault codes and sensor data and suggests likely causes, so you start closer to the answer. Bookings, estimates and parts ordering are getting quicker too. The physical repair, the road test and the customer's trust in your judgement stay human.

What you need to start

There are no formal entry requirements, although some employers ask for GCSEs. Most mechanics train through an apprenticeship, which usually takes three to four years.

Typical pay: £610 a week (about £31,700 a year).
Official UK pay for "Vehicle technicians, mechanics and electricians" (ONS ASHE 2022, via LMI for All). A guide, not a promise.

The steps, in order

  1. Explore maintenance careers Read about vehicle mechanic and maintenance technician jobs to see routes and pay.
  2. Learn the basics A short college course or evening class covers the basics of mechanics and electrics.
  3. Train through an apprenticeship Maintenance and mechatronics apprenticeships are funded and in demand.
  4. Add the EV specialism Electric vehicle skills are the fastest growing corner of vehicle work.
  5. Certify and specialise Recognised qualifications raise pay and open senior technician jobs.
  6. Use AI diagnostics as a tool Modern kit is full of data. Technicians who can read it are faster and rarer.
