Account / retention manager

Winning a customer once is marketing; keeping them for years is this job. Account and retention managers own the relationship after the sale: renewals, growth and the quiet work of making sure nobody wants to leave. It suits steady relationship-builders who like the long game and can talk about money without flinching. The honest hard parts are targets, difficult renewal conversations, and carrying the blame when a customer walks. What is new is that AI now watches every account for you, so your time goes to the relationships that actually need attention this week.

A day in this job

AI's overnight sweep flags two accounts drifting and one ready to grow, and you book calls with all three. The morning renewal conversation is delicate, so you handle it yourself with AI's usage summary open beside you. The afternoon is a quarterly review, drafted by AI and delivered by you. You log what you promised.

How AI is changing it

AI watches usage, flags churn risk, drafts the reviews and keeps every account's history at your fingertips. It cannot sit across a table and rebuild trust. What stays human is the judgement, the relationships, and the promises you make and keep, renewal after renewal.

What you need to start

There is no fixed entry route. What matters is evidence that you keep and grow customer relationships, with a funded customer success or digital bootcamp adding checkable proof.

Typical pay: £940 a week (about £48,900 a year).
Official UK pay for "Sales accounts and business development managers" (ONS ASHE 2022, via LMI for All). A guide, not a promise.

The steps, in order

  1. Read the role See what account managers own: keeping customers happy, handling renewals, and growing accounts through trust built over years.
  2. Practise the judgement layer Set up AI to draft replies and flag risks, then practise owning the tone, the checks and the hard cases.
  3. Learn the numbers that matter Renewals, churn and account growth are measured in money. Get comfortable reading and explaining those numbers simply.
  4. Add a funded credential A funded customer success or digital Skills Bootcamp gives your people skills proof an employer can check.
  5. Apply Service and software firms value people who keep customers, not just close tickets. Bring examples that prove it.
  6. Grow into senior account work The senior path is owning the biggest relationships and renewals, mentoring others, and shaping how the firm keeps customers.
