Onboarding / implementation specialist

The first few weeks decide whether a customer stays for years, and onboarding specialists own those weeks. You take someone who has just bought and get them set up, confident and seeing value before doubt creeps in. It suits patient explainers who remember what it feels like not to know. The honest hard parts are repetition, customers who arrive stressed, and being measured on how well strangers succeed. What is changing is that AI now handles the routine setup questions, so the human part of the role concentrates on the customers who genuinely need a person.

A day in this job

Three new customers are mid-setup today. AI answered their routine questions overnight and flagged one who is stuck and going quiet. You call that one first and walk them through it. The afternoon holds a group welcome session, then you update the setup guide where two people tripped.

How AI is changing it

AI answers the routine setup questions, sends the checklists and spots who has gone quiet. That frees you for the customers who are struggling. What stays human is the patience, the judgement on when to step in, the reassurance, and the promise you make and keep.

What you need to start

There is no set entry route. What matters is clear, patient communication and some checkable proof, such as a funded bootcamp, that you can set customers up to succeed.

Typical pay: £710 a week (about £36,900 a year).
Official UK pay for "Customer service managers" (ONS ASHE 2022, via LMI for All). A guide, not a promise.

The steps, in order

  1. Understand the role Read what onboarding specialists actually do: they get new customers set up, confident and seeing value in the first weeks.
  2. Learn the AI support stack See how AI handles routine setup questions, and notice exactly where a confused customer needs a human instead.
  3. Build the people skills Clear guidance, patience and plain writing are the edge. Practise explaining one process to someone who has never seen it.
  4. Get funded proof A funded customer service or digital Skills Bootcamp adds checkable proof to your people skills at no cost.
  5. Apply Software and service firms hire onboarding specialists. Show them customers you set up who stayed and succeeded.
  6. Grow into implementation lead Once trusted, take on bigger rollouts, write the playbooks and train new starters in how good onboarding is done.
