AI operations specialist

AI operations specialists keep an organisation's AI working well: setting up assistants, writing the instructions they run on, watching their output and improving the setup week by week. The field barely existed a few years ago and is growing fast, which means routes in are unusually open; careful, observant people from any background can build the experience in their current job. It is screen heavy and the ground shifts constantly, so you must enjoy learning. In return, you are early to a role every organisation will need.

A day in this job

You start by reviewing what the AI systems did overnight and flagging anything odd. Mid morning you refine the instructions for an assistant that keeps misunderstanding one type of request. In the afternoon you help a team set up a new tool and show them how to check its work. You log everything you changed and why.

How AI is changing it

This role exists because AI now does so much of the routine work itself. The machine drafts, sorts and answers; you decide what it is allowed to do, watch how it behaves, and step in when it drifts. Supervision, judgement and responsibility stay human.

What you need to start

There is no fixed route in: people enter with a range of qualifications, often GCSEs and A levels plus a vocational qualification, or through relevant experience. Apprenticeships exist in some areas.

Typical pay: £750 a week (about £39,000 a year).
Official UK pay for "IT operations technicians" (ONS ASHE 2022, via LMI for All). A guide, not a promise.
