Prompt & agent designer

Prompt and agent designers shape how AI assistants behave: the instructions they follow, the tools they may use, the checks that keep them sensible. It is a new craft, closer to careful writing and testing than to programming, so it suits people who are precise with language and honest about what works. Because the field is so young, evidence of real builds matters more than certificates. The hard part is constant change; what worked last month may not work next month. Curious, methodical people thrive.

A day in this job

You spend the morning testing an assistant against a list of tricky cases and noting where it goes wrong. Then you rewrite its instructions and run the tests again. In the afternoon you sit with the team who use it and watch how they actually work. You finish by writing up what changed and the evidence it improved.

How AI is changing it

The oddity of this job is that AI helps design itself: it can draft its own instructions and generate its own test cases. Your job is to set the goal, spot the failures it cannot see, and decide when it is good enough. Taste, scepticism and judgement stay human.

What you need to start

Most entrants have a degree or equivalent, though entry with other qualifications or significant relevant experience is possible.

Typical pay: £1020 a week (about £53,000 a year).
Official UK pay for "Programmers and software development professionals" (ONS ASHE 2022, via LMI for All). A guide, not a promise.

The steps, in order

  1. Use AI every single day Daily practice across many kinds of task teaches you where assistants shine and where they quietly fail.
  2. Learn how models work Free courses explain how AI models are built and why they behave oddly, without any heavy maths.
  3. Design agents for real tasks Build and tune assistants for genuine jobs, yours or a friend's, keeping notes on every change and result.
  4. Build an evidence portfolio In a field this new, portfolios beat certificates: show before and after examples with the test results attached.
  5. Check funded AI courses Funded Skills Bootcamps increasingly cover applied AI, a free and structured way in for eligible adults.
  6. Apply, then stay curious New prompt and agent roles appear monthly. Once in, grow by owning bigger systems and setting your team's standards.
